Chimney Safety Before First Fire of the Season
The NFPA recommends annual chimney cleaning and inspection — and in Madison's climate, September–October is the right time before the heating season begins. A Level 1 inspection (visual with basic tools) confirms that the fireplace and flue are free of obstructions, creosote buildup, and animal nests. Birds, squirrels, and raccoons commonly nest in unused chimneys over the summer. A single blockage in a chimney can cause CO to back-draft into the living space — the blockage doesn't need to be large to be dangerous.
Creosote Levels & Chimney Fires
Creosote deposits build in three stages: Stage 1 (dusty, light — brushes clean easily), Stage 2 (flaky, harder — requires professional tools), Stage 3 (glazed, tarry — extremely difficult to remove and highly flammable). Stage 3 creosote is the fuel for chimney fires, which burn at 2,000°F+ and crack clay tile liners. Burning only dry, seasoned hardwood (moisture content below 20%) and maintaining adequate draft significantly slows creosote buildup.
