FAQs

Moving & Storage FAQ — Utah

Damage during a move is the mover's liability, not normal wear and tear. Standard liability ('released value') is 60 cents per pound per item — essentially nothing for electronics or furniture. Full-value protection (available for an extra fee) covers repair or replacement. Document all damage before signing the delivery receipt. Never sign a blank receipt. File a claim within the company's required timeframe (usually 9 months).

This is called a 'hostage load' and is illegal under federal law for interstate moves. File a complaint with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) immediately. For intrastate moves, file with your state's moving company regulator and attorney general. You are only legally required to pay the original binding estimate amount plus legitimate documented overages — not an arbitrary inflated charge.

Verify: USDOT number (look it up on FMCSA.dot.gov for interstate moves), physical address (not a P.O. box), and whether they own their own trucks. Brokers book your move and sell it to a carrier you've never vetted — this is how many moving scams work. Ask directly: 'Do you own your trucks and employ your movers, or will you broker this to another company?'

Moving company liability (released value) is inadequate for anything valuable. Options: purchase full-value protection from the mover, use your homeowner's/renter's insurance if it covers moves (check your policy), or purchase a separate moving insurance policy. For valuables like jewelry, art, and electronics — document their condition and value with photos and appraisals before the move regardless.

For summer moves (May–September, peak season): 6–8 weeks minimum; 4–6 weeks for other seasons. Weekend and end-of-month moves book fastest. Last-minute moves are possible but you'll have fewer options and may pay premium rates. Get and compare 3 in-person or virtual estimates — never a phone-only quote for a whole-home move.

Take with you: irreplaceable documents (passports, birth certificates, wills), prescription medications, valuables (jewelry, cash), fragile sentimental items, car keys and important electronics you need immediately, and plants (movers typically won't transport them and they don't survive trucks well). Pack a 'first night' box yourself with items you'll need immediately on arrival.
